Coaching is a teaching, training development process in which an individual is supported while achieving a specific personal or professional goal. Coaching should be differentiated from therapy in that the coachee is not seeking a “cure” and is considered to be healthy.
Coaching can be effective if:
- The coach is freely chosen from different candidates by the coachee
- The process is framed as an “investment” in a valuable employee, not an attempt to “fix” anyone
- The rapport between the coach and coachee is strong
- The communication is predicated on complete honesty and trust
- There is a sincere desire to do some things differently on the part of the coachee
- The coach is perceptive and insightful and supportive
Essentially, coaching is a gift. It is a wonderful opportunity to take a hard look at yourself and with the help of a trusted advisor (someone who “has your back” and who is “on your side”) devise strategies and plans to be the best you can be.
